5 KEY INDUSTRY 4.0 TECHNOLOGIES

New Industry 4.0 technologies, spanning mobile computing to cloud computing, have undergone vast development in the last decade and are now ready to be used as commercially available, interconnected systems within manufacturing – this is Industry 4.0. It holds the key to accessing real-time results and data that will catapult the industry into new levels of lean achievements.


The concept of Industry 4.0 however, is not a simple one. It envelops many technologies and is used in a variety of different contexts. There are five pieces that define Industry 4.0 at its core. Each piece is similar in nature but, when integrated together, create capability that has never before been possible. In an effort to understand Industry 4.0, the following five terms are explained as they contribute to the next industrial revolution:

1. Big Data

As per Forbes, Big Data is a collection of data from traditional and digital sources inside and outside your company that represents a source for ongoing discovery and analysis. Today data is collected everywhere, from systems and sensors to mobile devices. The challenge is that the industry is still in the process of developing methods to best interpret data. It’s the evolution of Industry 4.0 that will change the way organizations and solutions within those organizations work together; teams will be able to make better, smarter decisions.

2. Smart Factory


The concept of Smart Factory is the seamless connection of individual production steps, from planning stages to actuators in the field. In the near future, machinery and equipment will be able to improve processes through self-optimization; systems will autonomously adapt to the traffic profile and network environment. 


Leading by example is the Siemens Electronic Works facility in Amberg, Germany. Smart machines coordinate production and global distribution or a built-to-order process involving roughly 1.6 billion components. When the Smart Factory is achieved, it will represent a pivotal shift for Industry 4.0, as the revolution will begin to roll out across multiple verticals. Various markets spanning healthcare to consumer goods will adapt Industry 4.0 technologies initially modelled in the Smart Factory.


3. Cyber Physical Systems

Cyber physical systems are integrations of computation, networking and physical processes. Computers and networks monitor and control physical processes with feedback loops; the physical system reacts, the system uses software to interpret action and tracks results. The notion centers on computers and software being embedded in devices where the first use is not computation; rather it is a loop of action and machine learning.

4. Internet of Things (IoT)

The internet of things is a simple term for a grandiose concept. IoT is the connection of all devices to the internet and each other. As Wired said, “it’s built on cloud computing and networks of data-gather sensors; it’s mobile, virtual, and instantaneous connection.” This interconnection will enable “smart factories” to take shape as equipment will use data to manufacture, move, report and learn at astounding rates, efficiently. 5. Interoperability

Interoperability is in essence what happens when we bring the above elements together. It is the connection of cyber-physical systems, humans and smart factories communicating with each other through the IoT. In doing so, manufacturing partners can effectively share information, error-free. Consider that no single company can dictate all its partners use the same software or standards for how the information is represented. Interoperability enables error-free transmission and translation.

From 3D prints to self-driving vehicles, Industry 4.0 technologies are propelling the manufacturing industry with new means of efficiency, accuracy and reliability. The level of intelligence offered today is only the beginning for what is to come.

The 5 Factors of Industry 4.0 in Practice

Self-driving vehicles (SDVs) are a primary example of this technological evolution. Compared to their predecessors (autonomous guided vehicles), SDVs offer industrial centers increased flexibility, higher throughput rates, and a faster return on investment. They move through plants with purpose, finding the most efficient route to their final destination by way of infrastructure-free navigation (no beacons, magnetic tape or cables). Onboard intelligence provides obstacle avoidance to ensure safe, collaborative work environments. Meanwhile, SDVs such as OTTO also offer intuitive light signals, much like vehicles on outdoor roads, to effectively communicate behaviors like turning, stopping, or parking. SDVs collect and share data from within the fleet, whether that fleet is used in on facility or many. Therefore, executives have visibility of real-time data and are able to make informed, educated decisions to positively impact KPIs and growth of their operation.
 

SDVs are only one example of how Industry 4.0 is going to transform the manufacturing sector. This industrial revolution will collect, use and share data so that industry can reach new heights in safety and efficiency, driving the sector closer to the ultimate goal of lights-out manufacturing.

Population-based vitamin D screening came in second, with the SGIM saying it is really only needed for higher risk patients when results will be used to institute more aggressive therapy. Otherwise, over-the-counter supplements generally do the trick.

Prostate-specific antigen screening in men ages 75 years old or above Came in third, with the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force giving the service a "D" rating. The group recommends against the service, as there is "no net benefit or the harms outweigh the goods."

Fourth was imaging for acute low-back pain in the first six weeks after onset. SGIM said that in the absence of red flags like trauma history, unintentional weight loss or history of cancer, among others, this imaging did not improve outcomes, but did raise costs.

Finally, the use of more expensive branded drugs when generics with identical active ingredients are available rounded out the list.

According to Health Affairs, healthcare purchasers spend $25 billion a year for these services alone, and that figure does not include downstream complications or services.
For providers, population-based, "supply-side incentives" where outcomes are monitored may be the best bet at stemming the tide of low-value care. Accountable care contracts could reduce low-value care through partial capitation or shared savings paired when coupled with meaningful outcome monitoring and broad quality measurement.

"Accountable care contracts encourage physicians to consider value, since incentives are explicitly aligned with quality and cost. In a national survey, 92 percent of physicians said they felt responsible for ensuring that patients avoid unnecessary tests and procedures, and 58 percent believed that physicians were best positioned to do so. Thus, physicians may be ready for a stewardship role in an environment where quality and payments are aligned," NEJM said.

Accountable care contracts may boost investment in practice policy setting as well as other potentially useful tools like patient decision aids, clinical decision support, and clinician education and feedback.

Other areas where there is potential to reverse the trend of low-value care included strengthening of risk-adjusted outcome measurement and creating new measures that help cut down low-value care, like decision quality, NEJM said.

"To address overuse, we now need to work against the current of culture and payment models that still largely reward volume over value. Accountable care contracts encourage providers to tackle overuse, but few providers currently share risk with payers for substantial numbers of patients. Providers participating in accountable care contracts should prioritize internal strategies for reducing use of low-value care."

Health Affairs pointed to other means such as accountable justification, or "gentle shaming" by prompting physicians to publicly justify inappropriate use in the electronic health record to reduce low-value care services and using system defaults to the advantage of generics. Setting system defaults such that generic medications are the top choice in the EHR boosts rates of generic prescribing, Health Affairs said.


"But more generally, there is a deeper need for a change in the culture of medicine toward one that promotes greater clinician engagement in delivering high-value care. Sense-making conversations with frontline clinicians, rigorous performance measurement, and performance feedback are among the essential components of this work."

Components of Server

Motherboard

Because the server usually has more devices than regular desktop computers, would require greater power (300 watts in general). If the server has a hard drive in smaller amounts, may require greater power.

Database server
Provides access to the database is one of the most important functions of a computer server. A relational database storage structure information is compact and efficient, and allows quick access to large volumes of data.
In a business office setting, a database can be used to store the contact details of the customer and order information, as well as shipping and payment notes. By accessing the server via a local network, multiple employees can retrieve and update information from the database throughout the day as the business is conducted.

Hundreds of Fifth Grade Students Learned STEM Skills at SAE International/Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia Event

Creating the most efficient and smooth-running balloon-powered vehicle was the task for 500 fifth grade students on Thursday, Nov. 15 in Atlanta during the SAE International A World In Motion® (AWIM) JetToy Competition, hosted by Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia, Inc. (KMMG).

Working in design teams, students culminated their classroom experience by building and testing model JetToy cars that they have analyzed for weeks. Throughout the competition, the students engaged in a variety of distance, accuracy and timed events applying science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.

“It is so exciting and encouraging to watch tomorrow’s engineers at work. These students are powering our future with their imaginations and tenacity, just as they are propelling these JetToys with balloon power,” David L. Schutt, PhD, Chief Executive Officer of SAE International, said. “SAE International thanks Kia Motors for their generosity and continued support of this important learning endeavor.”

The event was held at the Georgia International Convention Center in Atlanta, and included students from Troup County, GA.; Lanett, AL.; Harris County, GA.; Meriwether County, GA.; Carroll County, GA; and Chambers County, AL. Dozens of volunteers from KMMG supported the event by judging the competitions.

“We have more than 40 team members serving as mentors in the classroom and volunteering here today,” said Stuart Countess, Chief Administrative Officer, Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia. “Our goal is to bring text book lessons alive and help students realize the skills they are learning have real world applications in the workplace.”


In the JetToy curriculum, a fictitious toy company called EarthToy Designs presents the challenge in the form of a letter. The company requests that students provide a variety of interesting designs for a new line of balloon-powered vehicles made from inexpensive, common materials that will appeal to other children. Working in design teams, students build and test model JetToy cars, and collect and analyze data to understand the effect of several variables on the performance of the toys. They create multiple designs and test them, then give a formal presentation of their final JetToy designs.

Throughout the curriculum and during the November 15 competition, students explored the scientific concepts of jet propulsion, friction, air resistance and design, as well as soft skills such as collaboration, problem solving, innovative thinking and teamwork.

AWIM is a teacher-administered, industry volunteer-assisted program that brings STEM education to life in the classroom for students in Kindergarten through Grade 8. Benchmarked to the national standards, the AWIM program incorporates integrated STEM learning experiences through hands-on activities that reinforce classroom STEM learning.

3D Scanning Technology 

2.1. An Overview of 3D Scanning Technology 3D scanning technologies are potential tools for increasing productivity, while at the same time securing quality in product development. Generally, 3D scanning can be of big help in resolving the issues concerning ways of creating 3D CAD data for objects that do not have pre-existing computer models. Creating good digital representations is often of crucial importance when using today’s manufacturing methods. Today 3D scanners are available to digitize objects from microscopic to large constructions in size. Data points are captured with speeds ranging from a few points per second to more than a million points per second. There are handheld manual devices available as well as large size automatic scanning equipment [1].

There are mainly two methods for obtaining coordinates of an object’s geometrical shape. The first one is mechanical method which uses mechanical arms where the object is fixed on a table; the coordinates of the points picked by the inspector by means of touch-probes are transferred to the computer. With this system, measurement of formed and large surfaces may take hours or even days depending on the details of the object and accuracy of the measurement required. Accuracy levels up to 1 μm can be achieved by using this method. This level of sensitivity depends on the experience of the inspector and type of the equipment used. The second one is non-contacting scanning methods which can be classified in to three main categories optical, acoustic and magnetic. 

Optical scanning systems based on techniques such as laser scanning, fringe projection, photogrammetry etc. are being applied successfully for the 3D measurement and virtual reconstruction of object surfaces in many areas. Fringe projection scanning systems generally work with white structured light where the light pattern is projected on the object’s surface while one or two cameras record the reflected light while laser scanning systems can obtain data by sending laser light onto the object and processing the data obtained from the returning light [7–9]. The advantages of these scanners are that they are more portable compared to contact systems and their sensitivity levels are partially independent of the inspector. 


Optical scanning systems, e.g. laser or fringe projection can obtain a large amount of point data in a short period of time and the accuracy of laser systems vary typically from 1 μm up to 20 μm, whereas fringe projection systems have the capability of 10 μm up to 60 μm. Since the accuracy of the non contact systems are continually improving, they are now widely adopted for many applications in the industry [10]. 

Optical technology is generally preferred method because it gives a greater flexibility in the digitization of surfaces and provides higher resolution and accuracy when compared to mechanical technology [11,12]. Because of speed of measurement and greater flexibility, there is an increasing demand for optical scanning systems [13–15]. The advantage of contacting devices is that they do not depend on the color and reflective characteristics of the surfaces to be scanned which might be the case with optical scanners. 

2.2. The 3D scanner used in this study The Opto-TOP HE Breuckmann 3D optical scanning system used in this study utilizes 3D white light fringe projection technology to provide a fast and extensive capture of complex surfaces. This allows the simultaneous measurement of a large portion of the object in a single view. Over a million points can be captured in each image. Each of these scanned images takes around one second (Figure 2).

The equipment is portable and does not require the use of a mechanical positioning device. The scanner is designed to allow a quick change of lenses. The projector which is connected to the camera by means of a carbon fiber bar, projects the fringe patterns in rapid sequences providing a flexible system capable of measuring very small or very large objects. A carbon fiber base structure ensures optimum mechanical and thermal stability of the sensor. Calibration may be performed by the user within minutes, ensuring a high degree of accuracy.
